The Crucible of Bone
The Chuunin Trial of Kaguya Li
The Crucible of Bone
"KAGUYA LI!!
The shout to attend echoed across the sands of one of Kirigakure's outer combat arenas, startling birds from the nearby rooftops and sending a hush through the crowded stands. The genin in question had received a summons the day before for a trial by combat to prove his worth for the rank of chuunin, but had yet to appear in the arena. The proctor waited in the middle of the circular area, scowling this way and that until the combatants arrived. Li's opponent should be ready and waiting by now, too, but was evidently dawdling in the prep area leading into one of the arena's many entrances.
Matches like these were common in Kirigakure, and most drew just small crowds. A few locals coming for the easy entertainment, and not a few for the wagers one way or another. Usually a few genin watching to learn, or other recent graduates to chuunin who came to size up their peers and rivals. Sometimes, rarely, a few family members and friends of the combatants themselves. But today was another matter: The stands were heaving with activity, almost all seats filled, and no fewer than four fights had broken out within them already. The reason was obvious: Kaguya Li was more than a little controversial. The bookies would have good odds today.
"Both combatants are to present themselves for combat immediately!" The proctor raised his voice again, turning where he stood to watch both sides of the arena for their arrival. The sand-covered arena was circular, measuring 50m across in diameter and ringed with white marble walls which rose 10m high before giving way to the tiered seating beyond. Li would likely arrive through the eastern entrance, facing an opponent coming from the west. Combatants could bring any equipment and tools they wanted, and fight in any way they wanted; this was a fight to the end, to surrender, submission, or death, with no rules other than to win to succeed.

The Crucible of Bone
Li was sitting and waiting, hopeful that his skills and abilities wouldn't betray him this time around like they had done during that last international chunnin exam. He was still a member of the Head Hunters, so he most likely had a serious leg up against his opponent as he knew all of their techniques at this point but he still needed to prove that he was capable of fighting another genin who wanted to pass. Once Li heard his name he walked out of his eastern entrance and was shown in bright light.
They were wearing a bone white, loose fitting, long-sleeved, zip-up shirt, black pants cut off around the mid-calf with bandages wrapped around his ankles and traditional shinobi sandals. His stark white hair, that goes slightly past his shoulders matched the extremely pale skin that showed through his clothes, almost like he had never seen the sun before or that he was fighting off an illness.
He didn't appear to have really any gear on him at the time, not that he really needed it. His body by itself was a weapon, one that should be scary enough to win against most people in his age category and skill level. Lets see what his opponent had for him. Li had completely ignored the crowd, including the boos and other nasty comments made about him. There was still conflict in the air, something was brewing and Li was a piece of wood on that fire... even if he died here, the fire wouldn't go out... but if he won.. the fire might burn a little brighter and hotter than before.

The Crucible of Bone
The roar of the crowd heralded Li'd appearance on the sands. Scattered applause and cheering from one side, countered by shrill cries for blood and fury on another. The proctor hesitated for just a moment before raising his hand to Li in acknowledgement, signalling him to wait ready.
"HIRONOBU SAKAGUCHI!! The proctor turned and swung an arm towards the west side of the arena, where the cla-clack of a rising portcullis gate was to admit Li's opponent for the day. The crowd hushed, many leaning forward in their seats to peer into the gloom of the entryway to be the first to spot the competitor. But no one emerged.
"Sakaguchi! Get out here! Your trial awaits! The proctor scowled and began striding over to the west entrance, clearly frustrated. The boy had said he was ready. He stopped in his tracks half way there, the next curse dying on his lips. He could see Sakaguchi now. Some of him. The flayed corpse left a smear of blood as it was dragged by the hair out of the entrance and across the sands by another young man. A young man with pale skin, long white hair, and two red dots branded upon his forehead. He was shirtless, tall and thin, but sure-footed and displayed the many vicious scars across his torso with no shame. The crowd hushed a second time with shock and confusion.
"He won't be fighting," the man's voice rasped, sounding like a man fifty years older than he looked on the outside, then he let go of Sakaguchi's mangled head. It hit the sand with a soft squelch, unmoving. "I am Kaguya Kisei. I will fight Li."
And the stands erupted into a cacophany of noise. The anger was obvious from Li and Sakaguchi's supporters, panic, shock, horror. But from those who'd come from the Kaguya and the Kawazaiwa, come to see Li punished, there was evident euphoria in their cries. Kisei flexed and began moving, ignoring the proctor who held up a hand for him to wait.
But there was no waiting. Kisei launched into a sprint towards Li, his red-ringed eyes staring at his target like daggers. The proctor shouted, but whatever he said was lost to the roar of the crowd. Blood was about to be spilt.

Kaguya KiseiShow
KAGUYA KISEI
General Information
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Height: 5' 7'' [170cm]
Weight: 49 kg [109lbs]
Appearance: Kisei has long, lank white hair which usually hangs loose and ragged. His eyes are weary, red-ringed, and fervant. He is exceptionally pale and thin; he might pass for a weak patient on day release were it not for the scarring and obvious bloodlust in his manner. The ravages of the infamous ossifying disease, and physical rigours of its cure, have left their obvious mark upon Kaguya Kisei. The clan has little expectation that his body will endure past the age of thirty—if that. At fifteen he looks, sounds, and moves like a man thrice his age. And yet this changes dramatically when it matters most; in combat he becomes agile, determined, and relentless in the face of any foe. For all the vitatily it has taken from him, his Kaguya affliction has also granted him exceptional combat prowess. The varied scars and wounds perpetually marking his body are testament to the fact that he is not wary of applying those remarkable skills.
Kisei wears black trousers with a sturdy swordbelt around his waist and tight-fitting tabi boots. He typically pairs this with a white or black tank top beneath a matching loose haori, worn open at the front. His Kirigakure forehead protector is strapped to his upper left arm, leaving his forehead bear to proudly display the prominent twin red dots of the Kaguya clan.
Personality: Kisei is a paragon of what the Kaguya overall have become known for: Brutality and strength above all. Even among their number, his penchant for aggression, ruthlessness, and zealotry have become infamous. When there is an unsavoury task at hand that necessitates exacting force without any heed to morals, Kisei is among the first and finest candidates. He is sworn, blood, bone, body and soul, to the loyalist faction of the Kaguya and Kawazaiwa. - Battle Information Equipment: Kisei wields a pair of vicious double-bladed waraxes, carried in waist holsters on a swordbelt. Each axe measures 65cm in length, with each head measuring 20cm in length and width at the widest point. The axes are chakra tempered and perfectly balanced, allowing them to be thrown accurately over impressive distances. He also carries 5 kunai, 3 exploding tags, 1 smoke bomb, and 1 flash bang, all stored in a small pouch worn on the back of Kisei's waistband.

Shinden StyleShow
*[Shinden • Swaying Peltandra]
D-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
The use of larger swords and hafted weapons often makes close-quarters maneuvering of the practitioner's weapon more difficult. By placing one hand on the pommel/butt of the hilt or low section of the weapon's haft, the user is able to more easily maneuver, twist, slide, and flip their weapon in close quarters to cover a wider range of offensive and defensive options, using the second hand to give full power to their attacks and techniques. This Discipline represents the practitioner's mastery of this basic concept, allowing them to lessen the impact of their weapon's natural blind spots and weaknesses.
*[Shinden • Ambidexterity]
D-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
After practicing for a long amount of time with the concept of using both of their hands with equal skill, the user has developed a level of ambidexterity that allows them to utilize both hands equally and as effectively without any penalty. This extends to other methods of combat or simple everyday life as well.
*[Shinden • Stream Splitting]
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
A simple setup technique, the practitioner quickly and continuously spins their weapon in their hands, capable of switching their weapon between each hand if they wish. This technique can serve as a defense against projectiles and attacks, but its primary purpose is to set up the practitioner for their next attack or technique. Any attack or technique used after the practitioner uses this technique will be instantly launched at the practitioner's maximum Strength and Speed.
*[Shinden • Branch Cleaver]
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
One of Shinden's most basic offensive techniques, the practitioner raises their weapon over their head, using gravity and inertia to add momentum to their next attack. The practitioner then launches a ferocious two-handed swing in any single direction. The practitioner executes the cut in a circular motion, allowing them to quickly bring the weapon back to guard against a potential counterattack.
*[Shinden • Leaping Toad]
C-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Prerequisite(s): *[Shinden • Stream Splitting].
Taking to the sky, the practitioner jumps off of the ground, engaging their weapon in a ferocious spin. The practitioner can choose to complete this technique in one of three ways: a powerful diving swing or thrust, a somersaulting overhead strike, or a midair dodge by swinging the weapon in any single direction and allowing the momentum generated by the weight of the weapon and the swing to carry them in that direction. Due to the sheer momentum of this technique, if the practitioner's Strength is higher than the opponent's Endurance, any armor or weapon used to defend against this technique will be rendered ineffective, either by being rent from the opponent's hand or broken outright. This technique is not as effective when performed with a normal sword or katana.
*[Shinden • Turtle Shell]
C-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Prerequisite(s): 15 Strength, 15 Speed.
Momentarily torquing their muscles in their arms, the practitioner slams their weapon's blade or tip down into the ground, releasing the tension in a violent rotation as it plunges into the ground. Depending on the terrain, a doubled circular wall of large twisting rocks, stone, and bedrock will be uplifted and erupt from the ground, potentially striking opponents and providing a defense against attacks and projectiles. These slabs of earth have a Strength equal to the practitioner's Strength, but they only remain for four posts.

The Crucible of Bone
Li stood there for a moment, waiting for his opponent to come out, relaxed and uninterested as normal. He had a plan to beat this guy already built up and was ready to go until Li smelt blood. His attention snapped back to the enterance on the other side of the arena and he realized that this fight was about to get interesting and quick. Kisei had arrived to fight Li.. and he had apparently decided to flay this young boy for simply getting in his way. Once again, seemingly putting more fuel on this fire because he had decided to nearly kill this man rather than simply ask him to step down.
"You disappoint me Kisei... but I guess that is all you will ever be.. a disappointment. " Li flicked his hands out, creating a pair of kunai out of bone as he flicked them at his opponent rushing towards him. (Speed 15/ Strength 15). He wanted to see if his opponent was capable of dealing with two targets moving this fast, given that they were moving towards him relatively faster because he was rushing towards Li.
Li felt that he could end this fight in a single move, but it was very risky and if he didn't have to do it he wouldn't. After which time, Li flicked his arm down again and a bone sword fell neatly into the palm of his right hand as he waited to see what else his opponent would try and do. This fight got a lot more interesting, he was going to enjoy this... maybe far more then he should.

The Crucible of Bone
Kisei was not interested in having a conversation with a dead man, much less a dead traitor, and pressed forwards to force the fight as quickly as possible. His orders from the Kawazaiwa were simple and easy, free from any mercurial complication: Make the traitor pay. Create an example to all of Kirigakure of what happened to those who turned their backs on their sworn families. No trepidation. No quandry.
He drew his twin axes as he ran, beginning to swing them to build momentum. Almost at the same time as Li threw his two bone kunai, Kisei drew back the axe in his right hand, aimed, and threw the weapon in a spinning line directly towards Li's position. It would carve through the air and knock the first kunai aside, then continue onwards toward Li, its double blades tumbling end ever end.
The second kunai kept coming, and Kisei met it with a fast spin of the axe in his left hand, causing the kunai to ricochet harmlessly away to one side. The dagger had some force behind it, but not nearly enough to slow his advance, and he sped up again to continue his truculent charge forwards. His face broke into a twisting rictus of a fervent grin as Li formed his bone sword, but it didn't matter. And as Kisei came within range of Li he raised his remaining axe high, seized the haft in both hands, and swung downwards in a brutal arc with all his strength. One good hit was all it would take to break this worm!

Any attack or technique used after the practitioner uses this technique will be instantly launched at the practitioner's maximum Strength and Speed.
The axe in his right hand is then thrown at his full 25 strength, and moves at 25 speed. It will likely lose some speed and accuracy as it collides with one of the bone kunai, but it wouldn't be stopped or knocked aside entirely.
With the axe in his left hand he tries to block using [Stream Splitting] above, then charges forwards to use:

D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
One of Shinden's most basic offensive techniques, the practitioner raises their weapon over their head, using gravity and inertia to add momentum to their next attack. The practitioner then launches a ferocious two-handed swing in any single direction. The practitioner executes the cut in a circular motion, allowing them to quickly bring the weapon back to guard against a potential counterattack.
Waraxes:*[Shinden • Ambidexterity]Kisei wields a pair of vicious double-bladed waraxes, carried in waist holsters on a swordbelt. Each axe measures 65cm in length, with each head measuring 20cm in length and width at the widest point. The axes are chakra tempered and perfectly balanced, allowing them to be thrown accurately over impressive distances.

The Crucible of Bone
Li watched the man rush him, heading straight for Li with honestly very little regard for his life. That honestly made sense, given that this would be his last fight on his earth, or it would be Li's. Though if Li was a betting man, he would put him far more likely to come out ontop then Kisei.
As the axe came swinging towards him, Li wasn't surprised with his bone kunai struck it and simply bounced out, taking very little of the energy from it given that Li didn't even attempt to give it all that he could give it. Li made the tactical choice at that moment to turn his body slightly, with is right hand out front as he attempted to brush the axe coming at him aside. Their strength wasn't far off at this point, and the axe was already weakened before the strike, though Li did something odd. He let his bone blade go with the ax, flying off to the side before his image vanished for a moment. [Instant Strike] [+12 Speed]
All Li had to do was really avoid the 20cm of length of the axe head, that was honestly the only really dangerous part of the weapon. If he could get inside of that range, then even if he got hit, it wouldn't matter.
If everything had worked correctly, Li would be directly inside of the guard of Kisei, most likely not expecting the massive increase in his speed and also most likely unable to stop fast enough to prevent himself from running directly into Li's attack
Out of Li's palms appear two large bone spikes, and they were aimed to hit directly into Kisei's chest aiming for the lungs and heart specifically as his arms were currently up in a downward swinging motion, making attempting to block the attack with his arms impossible. [Death Bone Pulse- Dance of the Willow] [Strength 25/ Speed 33] Li was effectively doing two palm strikes to Kisei's chest, but with far more lethal intent then the technique normally is used for.
This did leave Li wide open for a counter attack, but he was planning on finishing this fight as quickly as humanly possible and Kisei left himself to try and end the fight instantly. Kisei had not only decided to leave himself completely open on his chest by doing a two handed over head strike, but also continued to rush at Li using his speed most likely not expecting Li to rush directly into the line of attack because who the hell would do that. Those milliseconds of time is all that it takes for a fight to end horribly for either Li or Kisei. If Li's attack was successful, Kisei would have two nearly half meter long bone spikes through his lungs or his heart, and hopefully the fight would be over and done with at that point.

Justu UsedShow
[Instant Strike]
A-Rank Nintaijutsu Manoeuvre
The user prepares an attack or action before priming their muscles and surging forward in an instantaneous, chakra-assisted movement towards or away from a target within 50 metres, which consumes one of the user's two available teleport movements per thread. This allows the user to jump forward and deliver a lightning-fast series of strikes to a target without any perceivable precursor motion, or to attack a target already in range and then instantaneously move away to a safe location by identifying an object within range that is at least 1/5th the user's size while preparing the technique. An object used in this manner must be solid and must not already be imbued with foreign chakra. The user can perform up to [Base Speed/10] strikes as part of this technique, performed at up to +12 Speed, but the focus on rapid motion leaves the user unprepared to guard and thus a corresponding Endurance debuff for the duration of the strike.
Death Bone Pulse- Dance of the Willow
D-Rank Taijustu
The user produces long, hardened bones from his body that can easily puncture opponents, dealing serious damage. The user normally only generates bones sprouted from the palms of his hands, but if these aren't enough he can produce additional bones from his knees, elbows, and shoulders so that he can attack multiple targets at once. The bones can range between half a meter to a meter long if needed, and the strength of the bones is equal to the strength of the user.

The Crucible of Bone
Kisei's grin widened as he watched Li parry his axe throw, sending both the axe and the sword that Li had used to parry flying off together to one side. He was wide open! Kisei's other axe rose, his muscles tensed, and he surged forwards ready to deliver a single staggering blow in his first pugnacious attack—only to suddenly slam directly into Li, sooner than expected. The other boy hit him as if he'd just run into a brick wall, stopping him in his path and interrupting his attack before his axe could fall. Then the two rods of bone spearing through his chest registered, and he looked down in shock. His eyes widened in disbelief at the sight of his own blood blossoming out of his chest. This wasn't right. They'd barely begun to fight. He'd come all this way, given his pledge to kill Li even if it was the last thing he did. How did he strike so fast?! He wasn't normal. He had no right to be so fast! An aberration!
He slumped forwards, sinking further onto the two spears of bone. The axe felt suddenly heavy in his grasp, too heavy, and he let it slip free from suddenly numb fingers, but he managed to bring his other hand in close and take a firm grip upon Li's torso. His mind was beginning to catch up, and the pain began to build, build, build. He couldn't quite get a breath, and felt blood welling up into his mouth. He fixed Li with an acrimonious stare, gurgled, and spat a mouthful of fresh, warm blood full into Li's face.
"F.. Fuck.... You..." His body sagged heavier, and his vision began to fuzz, then dim. There was... Still so much... He had to do..! He couldn't... Couldn't fail like this! He tried to scream, tried to pull himself back up, but his body wouldn't obey. His turgid heart was shredded with bone, and his energy was spent. Only blood and spit dribbled from his mouth as he tried to form words, tried to form thoughts. He had precious seconds left. With the one hand still pressed against Li, he dedicated the last of his willpower into forming one final technique, and a small blade of bone erupted outwards from his closed knuckle. At point blank range, directly towards Li's chest.
But Kisei would be dead by the time the bone would reach its target. His eyes glazed over, unfocused, and he fell with his full weight towards Li. Whether his last onerous attack hit or had any effect, he'd never know.

The Crucible of Bone
Li felt his two spears go in, he felt them slide past the ribs and the organs and he felt his opponent lose most of his strength. His body wasn't capable of moving oxygen to his muscles and his body was going into shock, he would be dead in seconds from now. Li heard the axe hit the ground behind him, but he noticed the dead man reach and grab his clothes trying to hold him close. Li knew this man didn't have any strength left in his frame as the bone spears separated from his body.
"Disappointment" was the final word that Li said to Kisei, and the final words his opponent would hear, as Li took a step to the side and back, letting his hands down and simply allowing his opponent to fall to the ground. Given how weak his opponent was, and how heavy his body was at this moment, Li knew he couldn't hold him hard enough to prevent him from moving or to keep his grip on Li's clothes as he fell to the ground at his feet.
In his final moments Kisei did attempt one final stab at Li, though with his body movement down and Li's back, all it did was leave a small cut on his chest. One that wouldn't require anything beyond a stitch or two maybe, and one that barely registered for Li.
Once that was done Li looked at the crowd, the one that mere moments ago was screaming in joy and ectasy in the fact that Li would get his reward for betraying the family and what not. All of that joy was at it's peak, only to in less than five seconds be cut short by Li killing their only hope at this time. Li stood there, hands, wrists and sleeves covered in blood without any emotion in his face as he tried to make his message clear to them all. He would not be killed so easily.
He stood there looking at them for a moment before turning towards the proctors and bowing deeply, going backing parallel to the ground as he said " I apologize! I know that killing your opponent in the testing is frowned on but I felt I had no choice but to fight as if my life was on the line. " That seemed to be the only concern for Li at this moment, that he broke a rule in his village's testing system rather then he just killed one of his clan members. Li did seem legitimately apologetic about this fact as he stayed bowed towards the proctor, his eyes closed as his back was facing away from the young chunnin that was turning the sand of the arena red as the rest of the fluids of his body poured out of the four holes in his torso.

The Crucible of Bone
Kisei's body fell to the floor and twitched visibly. Blood gurgled up and erupted in small, desperate spurts from both his mouth and the holes in his chest. His body was not willing to accept death easily, and spasmed unnaturally in its final throes, legs kicking bloody streaks into the sand beside Li. The watching crowd were deathly quiet, but soon enough murmurs began, passing from stand to stand around the arena in a trickle, then a rumble. The few supporters Li had among those watching were likely too unsettled and too intimidated to put voice to their praise. Instead their hands remained motionless, their mouths closed, as those around them rose and erupted in a roar of condemnation. Not for Li defending himself, not for winning, or even necessarily for killing his opponent—these things happened, and were a draw for many to come and watch at all—but simply for his audacity to continuing to exist among them. They'd come to see a wrong righted, but now witnessed the addition of only another grievance.
"Traitor" One shouted, echoed by calls of "Shame to your blood!". "Kinslayer! Kinslayer!" began another call, before others all throughout the stands began calling for "Death! Death! Death!" as if the exam were a trial for justice, and they the jury.
Belatedly, the proctor for the exam came sprinting over to Li, skidded to a halt, and gently pulled Li away from the corpses of Sakaguchi and Kisei, the latter just now finally falling still, the pumping of his blood onto the sands now beginning to slow. He faced Li away from the crowd, then knelt infront of him to capture the young boy's attention.
"This isn't how it was supposed to happen. But happen it did. Even though this 'Kisei' was not your intended opponent, you have still succeeded in battle for your Chuunin exam, Li. And this victory—however it happened—will be marked upon your record. Congratulations," he nodded his head quickly, though his eyes remained strained and his voice held no joy, "you have completed your trial. As you say, the death is unfortunate, but likely unavoidable. It was him or you. Everybody here knows it for the truth, whatever they may say openly, as if you would use this to aggrandize yourself. No one can truly condemn you for it."
He met Li's gaze and held it for a moment, then clapped him on the shoulder reassuringly. "You did good. Fought well, with stolid demeanour. It was a decisive victory, and it will be remembered. I hate to say it, but even more eyes will be watching you now. Go home and rest. And watch your back, moreso than ever."
Then he ushered Li out of the arena, shielding the boy from the crowd with his own body by walking behind him. The jeers of the crowd followed them from across the sands, lingering in the air long after the two were beyond sight.
